Summary

Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL is recruiting for a Cancer Registry Abstractor. For Florida residents and other select states, this full-time remote position offers a flexible work arrangement after successful completion of the 90-day introductory period. Position tiers may vary according to experience.  

The Cancer Registry department at Moffitt Cancer Center is dedicated to provision of timely, complete data of the highest standards of quality. Abstractors are responsible for reviewing all available information and capturing a high-quality comprehensive data set in compliance with the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACS/CoC), the Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS), and business needs of the department. Responsible for abstracting demographic information, medical history, diagnostic findings, cancer management information, first course of treatment, and survival information from patients’ medical records and other sources accurately into the Cancer Registry database.  

A successful candidate will possess: 

  • An Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) credential for all tiers 
  • A commitment to professionalism, high standards of quality, effective communication skills, and flexibility.
  • Thorough knowledge of state (FCDS) and national Cancer Registry data collection reporting requirements.
  • Accurate interpretation of the medical record including, but not limited to, operative, pathology, radiology, lab, and autopsy reports. 
  • Familiarity with abstracting processes, principles, and data standards.  
  • Familiarity with characteristics of diverse types of cancers, including typical disease progression, and relative prognoses, and national standards of care.
  • Knowledge of medical oncology terminology; proficiency with cancer registry databases, word processing software, and windows-based operating system; good judgment in prioritizing work to meet department goals, standards, and deadlines. 
  • Experience using database technology and EMR (Electronic Medical Record) system(s). 

Education and experience requirements per tier: 

***Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) Certification required

Abstractor Associate: 

HS (High School) Diploma with Course work in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology or equivalent experience in allied health field required. 

Abstractor I: 

Associate’s degree in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Public Health, Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Computer Science, or other related field PLUS 1 year of hospital-based cancer registry experience.   HS (High School) Diploma PLUS 3 years of hospital-based cancer registry experience may be considered in lieu of AA/AS Degree.  

 Abstractor II: 

Associate’s degree in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Public Health, Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Computer Science, or other related field PLUS 3 years of hospital-based cancer registry experience.   HS (High School) Diploma PLUS 5 years of hospital-based cancer registry experience may be considered in lieu of AA/AS Degree. 

Abstractor III: 

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Public Health, Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Computer Science, or other related field PLUS 6 years of hospital-based cancer registry experience.  AA/AS Degree PLUS  8 years OR HS (High School) Diploma with 10 additional years of hospital-based cancer registry experience in a CoC-approved program may be considered. 

Experience in a research facility and/or CoC-accredited program is a big PLUS.
