Wouldn’t it be cool to find an item for $25 and pay for your mortgage by flipping it? We are going to talk about how a $25 flea market find paid our mortgage last month.
This is an item I’ve sold a couple of times now and it’s an odd one. I’ve sold three items in this category for a decent amount. This was a $25 flea market find that I flipped for $1,000 to pay our mortgage last month. The best part was that it was easy to ship and did not have to go on a pallet via freight. My daughter could carry the box to the post office. What was it?
It was a prosthetic leg with a knee joint. We sold one about 15 years ago. At the time, I didn’t know what it was because it was just the knee joint piece, but I saw the name Otterbock and looked it up. I paid $35 for that one and sold it within 24 hours for $1,000. Since then, we’ve sold one other one and then this one.

I bought two of these prosthetics together in a box from a guy at the flea market with a couple of attachments. He was kind of disgusted by it and he just wanted to get rid of it, so he gave me a good deal. We paid $50 for both, so the average for each one was $25. Got $1,000 for this, so it was a great deal!
Selling Medical Equipment On eBay
You have to be a little bit careful when selling medical equipment on eBay. We’ve sold a lot of items in the past, but if you get flagged for something, make sure that you don’t keep listing it. It’s not worth relisting. They will flag your account. We’ve found that non-prescription medical equipment can usually be sold. If you can get it without a prescription, it’s probably good to sell.
Anybody can go out and get a prosthetic leg. They don’t have to be fitted, but they have pieces people can use to adjust them. For this one, the moneymaker was definitely the knee joint piece. Back in the day we also sold a lot of high quality knee braces, but those are hit or miss because they’re often designed for certain people. We haven’t sold those in a while and I’m not sure if they’re prescription.
One cool thing about selling prosthetics is that they were going to be thrown away, but now somebody else can use it and get it at a discount. I think that it’s helpful for everybody so that they’re not just thrown away and discarded because they’re so expensive to buy new.
Another medical item we’ve sold were the stretchers. We sold 12 of them last year and made a ton of money on them and we sold them for about a quarter of what they cost brand new. We sold all of them on eBay without a problem and shipped them via freight.

When selling medical items, be careful and check out other listings to see what’s been allowed to sell.
If you’re ever in question, jump onto the help of eBay and ask them questions or get them on the phone and ask them, “Hey, am I allowed to sell this?”
Who would have known you could buy a $25 prosthetic leg from the flea market and pay your mortgage with it? We were able to do it and we hope this inspires you to find something you can sell to pay your mortgage!
